The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will replace its iconic khaki uniform with Adire, insisting that no final decision has been taken on the matter.
The clarification was made by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, following widespread public debate over comments he made during a television interview on the ongoing reform of the NYSC scheme.
During his appearance on Channels Television, the minister spoke about plans to modernize the 53-year-old programme and referenced Adire as part of ideas being considered to encourage the use of locally made fabrics. His remarks were widely interpreted as confirmation that the traditional khaki uniform would soon be phased out.
The comments quickly generated mixed reactions, with many Nigerians expressing support for promoting indigenous textiles, while others questioned whether replacing the familiar khaki attire was necessary.
Seeking to clear the air, Olawande issued a statement on his official X account, stressing that his comments had been taken out of context.
He explained that Adire and Ankara were mentioned only as illustrations of suggestions received during consultations on the future of the scheme and not as fabrics that had already been approved.
There has been no official decision regarding a replacement for the current NYSC uniform,” the minister said.
According to him, his intention was simply to highlight some of the ideas being discussed as government reviews possible reforms.
He noted that authorities are carefully evaluating different options with the goal of adopting a uniform that reflects professionalism, promotes a distinct national identity, remains durable, is practical for corps members, offers value for money and showcases Nigerian culture.
Olawande also assured Nigerians that the review process is still ongoing and that every major decision will be based on extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders.
He said the government remains committed to ensuring that any changes introduced to the NYSC ultimately strengthen the programme while serving the interests of both corps’ members and the nation.
The clarification follows Monday’s approval by the Federal Executive Council of a broad package of reforms designed to reposition the NYSC for greater impact.
While uniform redesign is among the proposals being examined, the minister emphasized that the government has not endorsed any specific fabric or design, urging the public to disregard reports suggesting that Adire has officially replaced the long-standing khaki uniform.
For now, the familiar khaki remains the official attire of NYSC members as discussions over the future of the scheme continue.
