KWALLE: The Chairman of Ukwauni Local Government Council, Barrister Chiamaka Solomon Possible Ajede, has dismissed claims that Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ordered the arrest, detention or removal of a serving councillor.
Ajede made the clarification while reacting to a video circulating on social media alleging that the Delta State Government had imprisoned a serving councillor and removed him from office.
The council chairman described the claim as misleading, explaining that the councillor remains a sitting member of the local government legislative council and has not been removed from office.
According to Ajede, the councillor is currently under suspension by his colleagues following an alleged breach of the council’s code of conduct.
He explained that the suspension was an internal action taken by members of the council and was not an order issued by Governor Oborevwori or the Delta State Government.
The council chairman said the matter later became a police case after the allegations were formally reported to the authorities.
Ajede said the police subsequently investigated the allegations against the councillor and, following the investigation, charged him before the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba.
He stressed that the councillor’s current detention is connected to the ongoing criminal proceedings and should not be interpreted as an order from the Delta State Government.
The council chairman specifically rejected suggestions that Governor Oborevwori personally ordered the councillor’s imprisonment.
Sheriff did not imprison him, Ajede said, explaining that the councillor’s detention is a consequence of the criminal case currently before the court.
Ajede further clarified that the councillor has not been removed from office, despite the claims circulating online.
He is still a sitting councillor, the chairman said, adding that the councillor was only suspended by his colleagues.
The clarification is expected to put to rest speculation surrounding the status of the councillor and the alleged involvement of the Delta State Government in his detention.
Ajede urged members of the public to distinguish between the internal disciplinary action taken by the council, the criminal proceedings before the court and the role of the state government.
The council chairman maintained that Governor Oborevwori did not order the councillor’s removal or imprisonment, insisting that the matter is being handled through the appropriate institutional and legal processes.
