ASABA: Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has disclosed that he earns a monthly salary of ₦503,000, while Permanent Secretaries in the state civil service receive ₦900,000.
Oborevwori made the disclosure on Thursday during the inauguration of 12 four-bedroom terraced duplexes for Permanent Secretaries and the presentation of 12 official vehicles to newly appointed Permanent Secretaries in Asaba, the state capital.
The governor said his administration increased the salaries of Permanent Secretaries after they complained that some directors were earning almost as much as they were.
According to him, the adjustment was intended to recognise the responsibilities attached to the position and improve the welfare of senior civil servants.
“Today, Permanent Secretaries, your salary is ₦900,000. My salary as governor is ₦503,000. The Head of Service earns ₦1 million,” Oborevwori said.
He also noted that the state government had continued to prioritise workers’ welfare through housing, vehicle loans, training and other support programmes.
Oborevwori said 302 public officers had benefited from the Public Officers’ Vehicle Loan Scheme, while 119 others had benefited from the Public Officers’ Housing Loan Scheme.
He added that the government had also provided farm inputs to civil servants interested in agriculture as a means of generating additional income and supporting food security.
The governor further disclosed that 450 senior management staff participated in a seven-weekend training programme facilitated through collaborations with the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria.
Speaking on the presentation of the vehicles, Oborevwori said the provision was aimed at improving the mobility and operational efficiency of Permanent Secretaries.
He explained that official vehicles had previously been provided to serving Permanent Secretaries, adding that the latest presentation was for the 12 newly appointed officials.
The governor also said the appointment of the 12 Permanent Secretaries in May was designed to ensure that every local government area in Delta State had representation at the level of Permanent Secretary.
He stressed that the appointments were based on merit and not political recommendations.
“The process was properly done. None of those appointed was recommended by anybody. It was based on merit, the governor said.
Oborevwori also disclosed that his administration had approved the payment of a 13th-month salary to Delta State civil servants, beginning from December 2026.
According to him, the state government is preparing an executive bill to be forwarded to the Delta State House of Assembly to give the policy legal backing.
He said the legislation would ensure that the payment continues beyond his tenure.
The governor also reiterated that Delta State was among the first states to implement the new national minimum wage, noting that the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders, including the Head of Service, Commissioner for Information and the Nigeria Labour Congress.
While urging civil servants and political appointees to remain committed to their duties, Oborevwori warned against absenteeism, nepotism, waste, inefficiency, bribery and corruption.
He said his administration would continue to invest in infrastructure and initiatives designed to improve resource management, operational efficiency and public service delivery.
The governor also urged the beneficiaries of the newly inaugurated residential quarters to maintain the facilities and ensure their security, cleanliness and preservation.
