KANO: The death of Kano-based political commentator and social media personality Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu has triggered reactions from political figures and rights advocates, with calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Dan Shagamu was reportedly found dead inside his residence in the Gaida area of Kano State on Tuesday.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, while authorities are expected to establish what happened through a formal investigation.
Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso reacted to the incident, describing the reported death as disturbing and calling for immediate action by the authorities.
Kwankwaso alleged that Dan Shagamu was found in a pool of blood inside his residence.
The former governor, in a statement shared on his X account, described the incident as a serious matter requiring urgent investigation.
“I am deeply disturbed by the killing of the renowned social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was found today in a pool of his blood at his home in Kano,” Kwankwaso said.
He called on security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and identify anyone found responsible.
Kwankwaso further warned that if authorities failed to conduct what he described as a decisive and transparent investigation, an incoming NDC administration would revisit the matter.
Should the authorities fail to take decisive and transparent action, the incoming NDC Government will, upon assumption of office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable,” he said.
He also called for greater protection of opposition voices and the preservation of citizens’ constitutional rights, particularly freedom of expression.
Amnesty International Nigeria has also expressed concern over the reported death.
The human rights organisation called for a detailed investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding Dan Shagamu’s death and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
Amnesty International said outspoken individuals and government critics should be protected in a democratic society.
“In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed,” the organisation said.
The group also expressed concern over reports of political intimidation and alleged threats ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Husaini Mai Riga, described Dan Shagamu’s death as disturbing and unacceptable.
Mai Riga said the incident had raised broader concerns about security, freedom of expression and the protection of democratic values in Kano State.
He called on the Kano State Government and security agencies to urgently investigate the death and determine exactly what happened.
The NDC chairman also urged authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
According to him, journalists, commentators and other media practitioners play an important role in promoting accountability and strengthening democratic institutions.
He stressed the need for media professionals and public commentators to be able to perform their duties without intimidation or fear.
The reactions have continued to generate public interest in Kano, particularly over the circumstances surrounding the death of the political commentator.
While allegations have been made concerning how Dan Shagamu died, the precise circumstances and cause of death should be established through the ongoing or expected investigation by relevant authorities.
Mai Riga appealed for calm while extending condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends, colleagues and associates.
He also prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and called for justice to be served.
