Delta Governor Expands Free Healthcare for Women, Children Under Five

ASABA: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure that every citizen has access to quality healthcare, stressing that no Deltan will be left behind.

Central to this vision is the government’s policy of providing free medical services for pregnant women and children under five, which the governor described as a cornerstone of his healthcare agenda.

He noted that these groups remain among the most vulnerable in society and deserve targeted support to reduce maternal and child mortality rates.

Governor Oborevwori disclosed that his administration is investing heavily in the rehabilitation and upgrading of health facilities across the state, including general hospitals, primary healthcare centers, and specialist clinics.

According to him, improved infrastructure, the provision of modern equipment, and better working conditions for health personnel are crucial to delivering efficient and affordable services.

Acknowledging the growing challenge of medical brain drain, the governor commended doctors, nurses, and other health professionals who have remained in the country to serve despite lucrative offers abroad.

He described their commitment as an act of patriotism and resilience in the face of national economic and social difficulties.

“We recognize the sacrifices of our health workers who continue to stay, work, and save lives here at home. They embody true patriotism, and we will continue to support them with training, incentives, and an enabling environment to thrive,” he assured.

The governor also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the Delta State Contributory Health Commission and expanding the reach of the state’s health insurance scheme to ensure more residents can benefit.

He emphasized that his administration’s healthcare vision aligns with global best practices and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal on universal health coverage.

Oborevwori reaffirmed that healthcare delivery will remain a top priority in his M.O.R.E Agenda (Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security), pledging continuous partnership with stakeholders in the sector to build a healthier Delta.
