BREAKING: Lagos Govt Orders Shutdown of Computer Village, Gives Traders 18-Month Ultimatum to Relocate to Katangowa

The Lagos State Government has issued a decisive 18-month relocation deadline to traders operating at the popular Computer Village in Ikeja, directing them to move to the newly developed market site in Katangowa, Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Gbolahan Oki, during a stakeholders’ meeting with market leaders and executives held within Computer Village.

According to Oki, the relocation is part of the state government’s broader urban renewal and infrastructure development agenda aimed at restoring order to Ikeja, which was originally designated as a residential area before gradually transforming into a commercial hub without official approval.

The government wants your cooperation to ensure the relocation comes to pass. The time is now. We have to make the project a reality. The relocation period is 18 months,” he said.

He explained that the Katangowa relocation site spans about 15 hectares and has been equipped with basic infrastructure intended to support trading activities and reduce congestion currently experienced in Ikeja.

Oki assured traders that the new site was strategically designed to accommodate electronics and allied businesses, adding that its location offers access to essential supply chains needed for commercial operations.

He noted that the relocation plan was first conceived in 2006 but suffered repeated delays due to slow development of the new market site.

The Permanent Secretary emphasized that the current administration under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to inclusive governance, stressing that the decision to engage traders was aimed at ensuring smooth transition and minimal disruption.

The governor is passionate about infrastructure development and wants you to be aware of the relocation. Katangowa is a place chosen for everything relating to this market, he added.

Computer Village, widely regarded as West Africa’s largest electronics market, currently serves as a major hub for mobile phones, computers, accessories, and digital services, attracting traders and buyers from across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The planned relocation is expected to significantly reshape Lagos’ electronics trade ecosystem, with stakeholders closely watching how the transition will impact business operations, pricing, and accessibility.

With the 18-month countdown now officially in place, traders are expected to begin gradual preparations for relocation, while government authorities continue infrastructure development at the Katangowa site.

The move marks one of the most significant urban restructuring efforts in Lagos in recent years, with far-reaching implications for commerce, transport, and real
