Apple has introduced multi-seat app subscription purchasing, allowing schools, businesses and other organisations to buy multiple subscriptions in a single transaction and assign access to employees, students and other users.
The new feature is designed to simplify subscription management for institutions using Apple Business and Apple School Manager, giving them greater flexibility to purchase, allocate and manage app licences according to their needs.
Under the system, organisations can purchase multiple subscription seats through a single in-app purchase and distribute them using device management tools. They can also add or remove seats as their staffing, student enrolment or operational requirements change.
The development extends Apple’s existing tools for organisations seeking to manage apps across multiple devices and users.
According to the announcement reported by technology publication Neowin on Friday, October 23, 2026, multi-seat purchasing in App Store Connect will support group subscriptions.
The arrangement is expected to make it easier for schools and businesses to provide access to paid applications without requiring each individual user to purchase a separate subscription.
For example, a school could acquire subscriptions for several teachers or students under one purchase, while a business could provide app access to employees through its device management system.
The ability to adjust subscription seats could also help organisations manage changes in staffing and software requirements.
Apple has enabled multi-seat purchasing by default in App Store Connect, meaning developers generally do not need to change their settings unless they previously opted out or modified the relevant configuration.
Developers will retain the ability to adjust their subscription purchase options.
Apple has also outlined exceptions for some existing subscriptions. According to its guidance, subscriptions created before September 14, 2026, that do not use StoreKit 2 or have Family Sharing enabled are opted out by default.
This means the availability of bulk purchasing may depend on how an app’s subscription was configured.
Apple said organisations would be able to configure and test group purchases through their Sandbox Apple Accounts from October 28, 2026, allowing developers and institutional customers to prepare for the feature.
The report stated that wider availability through the App Store was expected in the winter, when customers would be able to purchase multiple subscription seats and invite other users to access them.
Subscriptions will be available through Apple Business, Apple School Manager and the App Store, subject to the relevant purchase options and developer settings.
The new purchasing option could reduce the administrative work involved in acquiring software for large groups of users.
Schools may find it easier to equip teachers and students with educational applications, while businesses could streamline software access for employees across managed devices.
App developers may also benefit by making their subscription products easier for institutional customers to purchase and deploy.
However, the actual benefits will depend on developers’ subscription configurations, the apps organisations use and the way access is managed.
Apple’s move reflects a broader effort to make its software ecosystem more practical for organisations that need to provide subscription-based tools to multiple users at once.
