Aisha Wakil (Mama Boko Haram) and Two Others Receive Five-Year Jail Terms

MAIDUGURI: On Thursday, Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri convicted and sentenced Aisha Wakil, also known as Mama Boko Haram, alongside two other individuals to five years in prison each.

The conviction, announced by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through its Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, followed the re-arraignment of the trio on Monday.

Aisha Wakil, the Chief Executive Officer of Complete Care and Aid Foundation, along with Programme Manager Tahiru Saidu Daura and Country Director Prince Lawal Shoyode, faced four amended charges related to cheating, conspiracy, and providing false information, amounting to N6 million.

One of the charges stated that between October and November 2018, the defendants had dishonestly induced Alhaji Bukar Kachalla of Abks Ventures Limited to hand over a 2012 Toyota Camry worth N6 million, under the pretense of executing a contract to purchase the vehicle. However, they neither purchased the car nor returned it to the petitioner, which led to their prosecution.

The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mukhtar Ahmed and Shamsudeeb Saka, presented three witnesses and several pieces of evidence.

Justice Kumaliya convicted the defendants and sentenced each to five years in prison without an option of a fine. The court also ordered the defendants to jointly and severally restitute N3.5 million to the petitioner. If they fail to do so, they are to serve an additional five years in prison.
