2027: NDC woos Obi, Kwankwaso with presidential ticket ahead of primaries

As political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has made moves to attract two major opposition figures Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso into a possible joint presidential ticket.

Both politicians were presidential candidates in the 2023 elections under the Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), respectively.

In a social media post, the NDC suggested a limited window for the two leaders to align with its platform ahead of its primary election deadline, further fueling speculation about ongoing coalition talks within the opposition.

The message coincides with growing grassroots mobilization by supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso under the OK Movement, which advocates a strategic alliance between the two politicians.

The movement has reportedly been gaining traction across several regions, adding momentum to discussions about a broader opposition merger.

Meanwhile, findings indicate that the NDC was invited to the recent opposition summit in Ibadan where parties resolved to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate but could not attend due to short notice.

Despite its absence, consultations and possible alignments are said to be ongoing among opposition actors seeking to strengthen their chances against the ruling party in 2027.

However, the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan, has cast doubt on the authenticity of the viral social media post, warning that multiple unverified accounts have been impersonating the party online.

Morgan clarified that only verified NDC handles should be considered official, noting that statements from unverified sources should not be attributed to the party.

The development highlights the fluid nature of opposition politics as key players explore alliances, mergers, and strategic partnerships ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race.
