Nigerian students seeking to further their education abroad now have an opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in Australia through the Australian Government’s fully funded Research Training Programme (RTP) Scholarship for the 2026 academic cycle.
The scholarship, funded by the Australian Government, provides financial support for outstanding domestic and international students enrolling in eligible Master’s by Research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes at participating Australian universities.
Unlike many international scholarship schemes, applications are not submitted through a central government portal. Instead, each participating university manages its own admission and scholarship selection process, meaning applicants must apply directly through their chosen institution.
The Research Training Programme is designed to ease the financial burden of postgraduate research by providing successful candidates with comprehensive funding.
Recipients may receive:
- Full tuition fee coverage
- Annual living stipend
- Research-related allowances
- Additional support offered by individual universities, including relocation assistance and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
For the 2026 academic year, the Australian Government has set the minimum full-time RTP living stipend at AUD 34,315 per year, although several universities may provide higher payments depending on their funding arrangements.

The Research Training Programme only supports research-based postgraduate degrees and does not cover taught master’s programmes.
