2026 Australia Government Scholarship: Everything Nigerian Students Need to Know About the Fully Funded Research Programme

Nigerian students seeking to further their education abroad now have an opportunity to pursue postgraduate research in Australia through the Australian Government’s fully funded Research Training Programme (RTP) Scholarship for the 2026 academic cycle.

The scholarship, funded by the Australian Government, provides financial support for outstanding domestic and international students enrolling in eligible Master’s by Research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes at participating Australian universities.

Unlike many international scholarship schemes, applications are not submitted through a central government portal. Instead, each participating university manages its own admission and scholarship selection process, meaning applicants must apply directly through their chosen institution.

The Research Training Programme is designed to ease the financial burden of postgraduate research by providing successful candidates with comprehensive funding.

Recipients may receive:

  • Full tuition fee coverage
  • Annual living stipend
  • Research-related allowances
  • Additional support offered by individual universities, including relocation assistance and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

For the 2026 academic year, the Australian Government has set the minimum full-time RTP living stipend at AUD 34,315 per year, although several universities may provide higher payments depending on their funding arrangements.

The scholarship is open to qualified applicants from around the world, including Nigeria, provided they satisfy the admission requirements of their selected university.

Applicants must also meet the institution’s English language proficiency standards, which are typically demonstrated through examinations such as:

  • IELTS
  • TOEFL
  • PTE Academic

Specific language requirements vary across universities.

The Research Training Programme only supports research-based postgraduate degrees and does not cover taught master’s programmes.

Funding is available for:

  • Master’s by Research: Up to two years of full-time study
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): Up to four years of full-time study

The programme aims to develop highly skilled researchers capable of contributing to academia, government, industry and other professional sectors.

The Australian Department of Education has clarified that prospective students cannot submit applications through a single national scholarship website.

Instead, candidates are expected to:

  • Select an Australian university offering the RTP scholarship
  • Apply for admission into an eligible research programme
  • Submit the scholarship application through the university’s graduate research portal

Each university determines its own eligibility criteria, assessment process and application deadlines.

Applicants are generally expected to prepare the following documents:

  • Research proposal
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic certificates
  • Referee recommendation letters
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • Other supporting documents requested by the university

Strong academic performance, an outstanding research proposal and excellent recommendation letters significantly improve an applicant’s chances of securing the highly competitive award.

There is no universal deadline for the scholarship.

Many Australian universities have application windows between July and October 2026 for students beginning their programmes in early 2027, while others operate multiple admission rounds throughout the year.

Applicants are advised to check the deadlines published by their preferred universities and submit their applications well before the closing dates.

Prospective applicants should note the following:

  • The scholarship is fully funded.
  • It covers full tuition fees and annual living expenses.
  • Additional allowances may be available depending on the university.
  • It is open to both Australian and international students, including Nigerians.
  • Only research-based Master’s and PhD programmes qualify.
  • There is no official age restriction.
  • English language proficiency is required by most universities.
  • Applications must be submitted directly through participating universities.
  • Competition is intense, making academic excellence and research potential essential.

Students are encouraged to carefully review the admission requirements of their preferred Australian university before applying, as eligibility criteria, funding packages and timelines may differ between institutions.
