Peter Obi Demands Immediate Release of Supporter Rilwan Olawale, Warns Against Political Harassment

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has demanded the immediate release of Rilwan Olawale, expressing concern over what he described as the continued intimidation and harassment of his supporters across Nigeria.

Obi, in a strongly worded statement, condemned the alleged harassment of his supporters, warning that such actions threaten democratic freedoms and Nigerians’ constitutional right to support candidates of their choice.

Describing civility as a sign of strength rather than weakness, the former Anambra State governor insisted that his political movement would remain peaceful but would not be intimidated into silence.

“The continued intimidation and harassment of my supporters across the country, the latest being the case of Rilwan Olawale, is disturbing and unacceptable,” Obi said.

He also criticised President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of undermining democratic values despite benefiting from Nigeria’s democratic system. Obi alleged that the President was encouraging or facilitating violence, although the statement did not provide specific evidence to substantiate the allegation.

Obi maintained that his campaign was peaceful and issue-driven, with a focus on providing Nigerians with what he described as a credible alternative built on competence, accountability, justice and compassion.

According to him, his movement has chosen persuasion over intimidation and peace over violence, stressing that its commitment to peaceful political engagement should not be mistaken for fear or weakness.

“We will not be intimidated into silence, nor will we abandon Nigerians who believe in a New Nigeria that is possible and will be OK,” he declared.

The former presidential candidate called for transparency regarding Olawale’s arrest, his immediate release, respect for his fundamental rights and an end to what he described as politically motivated harassment.

He further argued that no government or political party should prevent Nigerians from freely supporting the presidential candidate or political platform of their choice.

Obi said his supporters would continue to pursue their political objectives through peaceful and lawful means, while firmly resisting any attempt to undermine their democratic rights.

The statement comes amid growing political activities and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political actors intensify efforts to mobilise supporters and promote their preferred candidates.

Obi concluded his message by reaffirming his commitment to a peaceful political movement and reiterating his campaign slogan: A New Nigeria is possible and will be OK.
