Why Tangaza Council Chairman Resigns, Dumps APC in Sokoto

The Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Isah Salihu Basharu Kalanjeni, has resigned from office and withdrawn his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has generated fresh political interest in the state.

Kalanjeni’s resignation from both his position as council chairman and the ruling party comes amid growing political developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Secretary to the Sokoto State Government, Kalanjeni said he was stepping down because of administrative challenges that had made it difficult for him to effectively carry out his responsibilities as the elected chairman of the council.

The letter, dated May 5, 2026, stated that the decision followed extensive consultations with his family, friends and political associates.

After extensive consultations with my family, friends and political associates, I have decided to resign my position as Executive Chairman due to administrative challenges which make it impossible for me to execute my mandate as elected council chairman,” he wrote.

In a separate letter dated July 7, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Kalanjeni Ward in Tangaza Local Government Area, the former council chairman formally announced his resignation from the ruling party.

Although Kalanjeni confirmed his decision to leave the APC, he did not disclose the reasons behind his exit from the party.

His resignation has fueled speculation over his next political move, particularly given his influence in Tangaza Local Government Area and the wider Sokoto North Senatorial District

Kalanjeni expressed gratitude to the people of Tangaza for the confidence and support they gave him during his tenure as council chairman.

He also thanked councillors and members of the local government legislative council for their cooperation throughout his administration.

The former chairman urged residents to continue supporting initiatives that promote peace, unity and sustainable development within the local government area.

He further wished the incoming administration success in advancing the development of Tangaza.

Before becoming chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area, Kalanjeni had served three consecutive terms as a member of the House of Representatives, making him one of the prominent political figures in Sokoto State.

His resignation from both office and the APC is expected to have political implications within the state’s ruling party, especially as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of future elections.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Sokoto State Government nor the All Progressives Congress (APC) had issued an official statement regarding Kalanjeni’s resignation.

Authorities have also not announced any formal arrangements for leadership transition in Tangaza Local Government Area.

Political observers are closely monitoring developments to determine whether the former council chairman will align with another political party or make further announcements regarding his political future.

His resignation marks another notable shift in Sokoto State’s political landscape as parties continue to reposition ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
