TENNESEE-USA: Following the death of country music icon Dolly Parton at 80, fans can still experience her extraordinary life and career through the Dolly Parton Experience at Dollywood in Tennessee.
The attraction, which opened in 2024, offers an intimate journey through Parton’s childhood, rise to fame, music, family and philanthropy. Spread across several buildings, it is three times larger than the former Chasing Rainbows Museum.
One of its main attractions, Songteller, takes visitors through Parton’s early years and her journey from rural Tennessee to Nashville. The exhibition features personal memorabilia, photographs, guitars and a replica of the famous coat of many colors made by her mother.
Visitors can also hear Parton tell parts of her own story. Among the recordings is a letter she wrote to her parents after arriving in Nashville, assuring them that she would succeed if she continued working hard.
The experience also explores Parton’s relationship with her late husband, Carl Dean, whom she first met at a laundromat, as well as key moments in her music career. A 360-degree projection show transports visitors to significant locations connected to her life, including her childhood home in Locust Ridge and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
Another major section, Behind the Seams, showcases Parton’s distinctive fashion. The exhibit contains costumes, shoes, wigs and other clothing worn by the entertainer throughout her career. Some pieces had never previously been displayed publicly.
Visitors can also interact with the exhibition by creating different looks for a cartoon version of Parton.
At the Precious Memories exhibit, guests can hear Parton discuss her family and faith. Childhood photographs and footage featuring her relatives accompany her recorded stories. Dollywood officials said they deliberately allowed Parton to narrate these sections because nobody could tell her story better than she could.
The attraction also features Dolly’s Home-on-Wheels, a motor coach used by Parton from 1994 to 2009, as well as Dolly’s Fan Shop, which sells exclusive merchandise.
Another display tracks the number of books distributed through Parton’s Imagination Library, the literacy programme that has become one of her most significant philanthropic legacies.
The Dolly Parton Experience is open to all Dollywood guests at no additional cost, although visitors must have valid admission to the theme park.
As Dollywood mourns its founder and guiding force, the attraction now serves as an important place where fans can remember Parton through her own words, music, photographs, possessions and memories.
Her legacy, preserved within the park she helped build, reflects a life shaped by music, ambition, family, generosity and the belief that dreams should continue to grow.
