Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he decided against taking Galatasaray’s famous No. 9 jersey, choosing instead to continue wearing his preferred No. 45 shirt ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Nigerian forward, who completed a permanent transfer to the Turkish champions after a successful spell with the club, said the decision was based on the success and confidence he has enjoyed while wearing No. 45.
Speculation had suggested Osimhen would inherit the No. 9 shirt following the departure of Argentine striker Mauro Icardi. However, the prolific goalscorer has remained with No. 45 throughout Galatasaray’s preseason preparations.
Speaking about his decision, Osimhen explained that he believes the jersey has brought him luck and prefers not to change it. I know you’ll probably sell more shirts, but I think you’ll understand me.
Number 45 has brought me good luck at Galatasaray. I want to continue with the same number, Osimhen said, according to Turkish outlet Sabah.
Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has become one of the club’s most influential players, winning over supporters with his consistent performances and goals.
The 27-year-old recently opened his preseason scoring account in Galatasaray’s entertaining 3-3 draw against French side Rennes, a performance that has further raised expectations ahead of the new campaign.
