US Sends 9,000 More Troops and Third Aircraft Carrier to Middle East as Trump Weighs New Iran Strikes

WASHINGTON DC: The United States is moving roughly 9,000 additional troops and a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East as President Donald Trump considers whether to launch further strikes against Iran, according to a report by The Associated Press.

The deployment, disclosed by a U.S. official on Thursday, October 1, comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and growing indications that the conflict could enter a more complicated phase.

The new military movement includes more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines aboard a group of ships heading toward the region. The deployment also includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group.

The development comes as Trump has again raised the possibility of additional military action against Iran, including a potential escalation after the November 3 U.S. midterm elections.

The arrival of the additional forces could result in three U.S. aircraft carriers operating in the Middle East as early as the end of October, according to the U.S. official, who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the military operation.

The latest movement would significantly increase the number of American military personnel and aircraft operating in the region.

With forces already stationed there, the deployment could bring the number of U.S. sailors and Marines in the Middle East to more than 20,000, supported by hundreds of aircraft.

The United States previously had three carrier strike groups operating in the Middle East in April, the first time that had happened since 2003, according to the report.

Two other carriers, the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, are already in the region alongside the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group.

The George Washington, which normally operates in the Pacific, was moved to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln following the latter’s extended deployment.

The latest military deployment comes as Trump has continued to signal that further strikes against Iran remain possible.

In an interview with Time magazine published Thursday, Trump said it was possible that the United States could increase bombing in Iran after the November 3 elections.

He declined to provide details about any potential military strategy when questioned about where future attacks could take place.

Trump also said he rejected Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal because he did not consider it sufficient.

Among the proposals discussed was an offer by Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important energy and shipping route.

Trump said the wider proposal did not go far enough to meet his expectations.

Another development adding to tensions came after a FlyDubai co-pilot allegedly stabbed his captain and attempted to crash an Israel-bound aircraft on Wednesday.

Asked at the White House whether there was a connection between the incident and Tehran, Trump said preliminary information suggested there was.

Trump, however, did not provide evidence or further details about the alleged connection.

He said that if Iran’s involvement were established, the United States would retaliate.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said in a Fox News interview that investigators believed the suspect had undergone what he described as radical Islamist indoctrination, although he did not provide further details.

The allegations remain part of an ongoing investigation, and the reported connection to Iran had not been publicly substantiated in the material reviewed for this report.

The latest deployment represents a substantial increase in America’s naval presence in the Middle East.

The ships carrying the additional forces include the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, which recently deployed with the cruiser USS Chosin.

The USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group is also part of the deployment, with the USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage amphibious landing ships.

If the three carrier groups are operating in the region by late October as projected by the U.S. official, the American military presence would reach an unusually high level.

The development comes against the backdrop of an already extensive U.S. military operation involving aircraft, naval forces and personnel across the region.

The conflict is also generating security concerns beyond the immediate U.S.-Iran confrontation.

According to the report, British authorities arrested a dual British-Iranian national in London on suspicion of plotting a terror attack following a security incident at RAF Fairford, a U.S.-linked military base in England.

Five British nationals had previously been arrested near the base over suspected explosives and terrorism-related offences.

The five suspects were subsequently released on bail, while the investigation continued.

RAF Fairford has been used by American bombers involved in operations against Iran, adding another layer to concerns over possible retaliatory or asymmetric activity linked to the conflict.

The growing American military deployment comes at a sensitive point in the conflict, with Washington weighing its next steps and Tehran facing increasing pressure over the war and its economic and strategic consequences.

Trump has previously indicated that further escalation after the U.S. midterm elections remains possible, despite earlier expectations that the conflict would be relatively short.

The deployment of another carrier and thousands of additional personnel therefore places renewed attention on the possibility of expanded U.S. military operations against Iran.

For now, the scale and timing of any further action remain uncertain, while the additional American forces move toward the region.
