UMUNEDE: The Ika Nation, Umunede community, and the wider Delta State family are united in grief following the passing of Chief (Barr.) Edwin Ogomegbulem Osuhor, the recently appointed Head of Collective Leadership (HCL) of Onu Ika Nigeria.
Chief Osuhor reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday, June 12, 2025, only months after being unveiled as the new leader of the apex socio-cultural body of the Ika people.
Widely known as the Edosomwan of Umunede, Chief Osuhor’s death marks the end of an era for a man whose influence spanned legal, administrative, and cultural spheres.
He was the first lawyer from Umunede to be called to the Bar, a pioneering figure in the legal profession who opened the door for many others from his hometown and beyond.
In 1991, Chief Osuhor was appointed by then military president General Ibrahim Babangida as the first Registrar of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)
During his tenure, he led the transformation of the commission from an outdated, analogue structure under the Ministry of Commerce into a modern, digitized institution, laying the foundation for today’s corporate regulatory framework in Nigeria.

Beyond his professional excellence, Chief Osuhor was a devout Catholic and a Knight of St. Mulumba, a man of deep faith and moral grounding. He was also a prominent community leader, serving as the President-General of the Umunede Progressive Union (UPU), where he championed development, unity, and youth empowerment in his hometown.
In August 2024, at the annual Ogwa Ika cultural gathering, Chief Osuhor was formally installed as the Head of Collective Leadership (HCL) of Onu Ika Nigeria, succeeding Elder Daniel Usifoh, who had served in that role for 13 years.

His appointment was celebrated across the Ika nation, with many viewing him as the ideal bridge between tradition and modern governance.
Chief Osuhor’s leadership style was marked by fairness, wisdom, and outspokenness. He carried the legacy of his father, Chief Osuhor Sr., a respected parliamentarian and political figure of the First Republic who played a key role in the early NCNC politics that birthed the Anioma identity.
In many ways, Edwin Osuhor continued that tradition of service, embodying the values of civic virtue, patriotism, and public duty.
The Umunede Facebook Forum and the Umunede Lawyers Forum have both expressed deep sorrow at his passing, praising his contributions to law, governance, and social advocacy.
As the people of Umunede, the Ika Nation, and Delta State mourn this monumental loss, we pray to God Almighty to grant Chief Edwin Osuhor eternal rest.
May his noble soul rest in perfect peace.
