Trump, Xi conclude Beijing summit with cautious progress on US–China relations

BEIJING: Donald Trump and Xi Jinping have concluded high-level talks in Beijing, claiming progress toward stabilising relations between the world’s two largest economies, even as major disagreements remain over issues including Iran, Taiwan, and trade policy.

The meeting, held at Xi’s official residence in Zhongnanhai, marked the final engagement of a three-day summit that both leaders described in broadly positive terms, despite lingering strategic tensions.

Trump said the discussions were “really a great couple of days,” while Xi described the talks as a “milestone visit,” noting efforts to build what he called a “constructive, strategic, stable relationship” between the two countries.

However, underlying disputes remain unresolved, particularly over Taiwan, which Beijing considers its most sensitive territorial issue. Chinese officials warned that mismanagement of the issue could lead to serious conflict between the two powers.

Trade and economic cooperation were also central to the discussions. The US side reportedly pushed for expanded Chinese purchases of American agricultural goods and aircraft, while also seeking improved market access for US financial and credit card firms.

Trump said China could commit to large-scale purchases, including potentially hundreds of Boeing aircraft, though no formal agreement details were released at the end of the visit.

The leaders also discussed the ongoing Iran conflict and its impact on global energy markets. According to officials, both sides expressed interest in stabilising the situation and reopening key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil trade flows.

Despite the tone of cooperation, analysts say deep structural tensions persist, particularly over technology, security, and influence in global supply chains.

The summit ended with symbolic gestures of goodwill, including a farewell ceremony at Beijing Capital International Airport, but no major breakthrough agreements were publicly announced.
