UMUAHIA: President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other prominent Nigerians have renewed calls for national unity, patriotism, and selfless leadership as Abia State commemorated the 60th memorial anniversary of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi.
The memorial ceremony, held in Umuahia to mark the 60th anniversary of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s assassination on July 29, 1966, brought together serving and former public officials, military officers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, diplomats, and members of the late leader’s family. Speakers at the event urged Nigerians to reflect on the lessons of history and work collectively toward building a peaceful, united, and prosperous nation.
Representing President Tinubu at the event, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a courageous and disciplined military officer who assumed leadership during one of the most turbulent periods in Nigeria’s history.
According to the President’s message, although Aguiyi-Ironsi’s administration was short-lived, his commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity remains a worthy example for present and future generations.
Tinubu stressed that the values of patriotism, discipline, integrity, and selfless service demonstrated by the late Head of State are still essential to Nigeria’s development. He urged Nigerians to embrace the country’s ethnic and cultural diversity as a source of strength rather than division.
The President also commended Governor Alex Otti for what he described as visionary leadership and quality governance in Abia State, praising the state government for preserving the memory of one of Nigeria’s most significant historical figures.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Otti said the event was more than a remembrance of a fallen leader. According to him, it served as a reminder of the importance of unity, merit, sacrifice, and placing national interest above ethnic or personal considerations.
He noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi’s willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for Nigeria should inspire both leaders and citizens to prioritize the nation’s collective welfare.
The governor further emphasized that appointments under his administration are based strictly on competence, integrity, and capacity rather than state of origin or ethnic affiliation. He argued that Nigeria would achieve greater progress if leaders embraced meritocracy and national unity.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo joined other dignitaries in paying glowing tribute to the late military leader, describing him as a patriotic Nigerian whose sacrifice should never be forgotten.
Also speaking at the event were former Chief of Army Staff, General Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd), and former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, who both praised Aguiyi-Ironsi’s dedication to national service. They commended the Abia State Government for preserving the country’s history and urged Nigerians to continue promoting peace, unity, and selfless service.
Presenting a citation on behalf of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, the late leader’s daughter, Mrs. Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi, explained that the memorial was designed to preserve her father’s legacy rather than reopen historical wounds or deepen divisions.
She appealed to current and future leaders to uphold the principles of justice, accountability, discipline, fairness, and commitment to the common good in the task of nation-building.
The memorial activities included special prayers, the consecration of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tomb by the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, and a wreath-laying ceremony led by President Tinubu’s representative, Governor Alex Otti, representatives of various state governments, Dame Patience Jonathan, and other distinguished guests.
The event concluded with tributes from family members, military personnel, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic community, all of whom acknowledged Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi’s enduring contributions to Nigeria’s unity and nation-building while reiterating the need for Nigerians to draw lessons from the country’s history in pursuit of lasting peace and national cohesion.
