President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Managing Director of the South-East Development Commission, Mark Okoye, on his 40th birthday, even as the agency faces ongoing scrutiny from the Nigerian Senate over alleged financial irregularities.
The message of goodwill comes amid a heated legislative investigation into claims of mismanagement of ₦16.6 billion in budget allocations, raising public debate over accountability within the commission.
The Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission, chaired by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has been investigating alleged financial infractions within the agency.
Key allegations under review include:
- ₦153 million reportedly spent on renting an Abuja liaison office
- Alleged failure to properly account for about ₦3.6 billion
- Broader concerns over expenditure transparency within the commission
Okoye has reportedly been asked to submit detailed documentation by June 23 to clarify the disputed transactions
In a statement issued by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Okoye as a committed public servant with a strong record in governance and economic planning.
The President commended his:
- Dedication to public service
- Leadership of the South-East Development Commission
- 14-year track record in government roles
Tinubu also urged him to remain focused on delivering the commission’s mandate despite the ongoing scrutiny.
Before heading the South-East Development Commission, Okoye served in several key roles in Anambra State, including:
- Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget
- Special Adviser to the Governor
- Managing Director of the State Investment Promotion Agency
His career has often been described as youth-driven and reform-oriented within the public sector.
The President’s birthday message has sparked discussion, as it coincides with an active Senate probe into the commission’s financial operations.
While supporters view the gesture as encouragement for young public administrators, critics argue it may overshadow ongoing accountability efforts.
