Tinubu Appoints Bishop Kukah as Pro-Chancellor of Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia

President Bola Tinubu has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the newly established Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State.

The announcement was made on Monday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement titled “President Tinubu Appoints Bishop Kukah as Pro-Chancellor of Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.”

This appointment follows Tinubu’s directive just 33 days earlier for the Federal Government to take over Nok University, Kachia, a private institution, and convert it into a federal university. Following the transition, the university was officially renamed the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.

Other Key Appointments

Alongside Bishop Kukah, Tinubu also approved the appointment of principal officers for the university:

  • Vice Chancellor: Prof. Qurix Barnabas
  • Registrar: Sanusi Adamu
  • Bursar: Ibrahim Dalhat
  • University Librarian: Prof. Daniel Abubakar

Additionally, four members were appointed to the university’s Governing Council, representing various regions of the country:

  • Thomas Etuh – North Central
  • Chief Fabian Nwaora – South East
  • Prof. Femi Taiwo – South West
  • Zarah Bukar – North East

The statement emphasized that all appointees were carefully selected based on their exceptional careers, leadership experience, and commitment to advancing education in Nigeria.

Vision for the University

President Tinubu urged the new leadership to leverage their expertise in establishing the university as a center of academic excellence and research. He emphasized that their work should align with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on national development through education.

Furthermore, he called on the appointees to provide visionary leadership and lay a strong foundation for the university as it prepares to welcome its first cohort of students in September 2025.

This appointment marks a significant step in the Federal Government’s efforts to expand access to higher education and strengthen academic institutions in Nigeria.
