Mohamed Salah has voiced deep frustration over his recent treatment at Liverpool, claiming he has been unfairly sidelined and made a scapegoat for the club’s struggles this season.
The Egyptian forward spoke out following Liverpool’s dramatic 3–3 draw with Leeds United; after being left on the bench for a third consecutive league match a situation he described as unprecedented in his career.
Liverpool have endured a difficult Premier League campaign so far, winning just two of their last 10 matches and failing to claim victory in eight of 15 league fixtures.
Despite having been a regular starter during most of the downturn, Salah, who has scored 188 league goals since joining the club in 2017, has seen his role drastically reduced, featuring in only one of the last three games.
I can’t believe I’m sitting on the bench for 90 minutes three times in a row, the 33-year-old said. It’s the first time this has happened in my career. I’m extremely disappointed.
I’ve done so much for this club, especially last season, and now I’m on the bench without knowing why.
Salah suggested that the decision contradicts assurances given to him after signing a two-year contract extension last summer. He expressed the feeling that he has been unfairly blamed for the team’s poor form.
It feels like the club has thrown me under the bus, he said. Someone wanted me to take all the blame.
I was given a lot of promises in the summer, but so far, I have been on the bench for three games, so I can’t say those promises to have been kept.
The Egyptian captain also hinted at a breakdown in his relationship with the manager, saying communication between them has all but disappeared.
I always said I had a good relationship with the manager, and suddenly, we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why. From the way I see it, it feels like someone doesn’t want me at the club anymore, he added.
Despite his disappointment, Salah reaffirmed his affection for Liverpool and its supporters, stressing that the club will always remain close to his heart.
I love this club so much and I always will. My kids will always support Liverpool, he said. I even told my family to come for the Brighton game.
I don’t know if I’ll play or not, but I just want to enjoy it because I don’t know what will happen from here.
With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, Salah confirmed he intends to say goodbye to the Anfield faithful before departing for international duty.
I will be at Anfield to say goodbye to the fans before going to the Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t know what will happen when I am away, he said.
