UYO: Rwanda produced a memorable performance on Monday, defeating already-qualified Nigeria 2-1 in a dramatic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. Despite a brilliant solo goal from Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze in the 59th minute, two quick-fire goals from Rwanda turned the game around and handed the Amavubi a historic victory over the Super Eagles.

The win, however, was bittersweet for Rwanda, as they fell short of qualification for the tournament. Although they finished third in Group D with 8 points, they were edged out by Benin Republic, who secured the second qualification spot thanks to a superior goal difference.

The match at home marked the end of Nigeria’s qualification campaign, which had already been sealed after Libya’s loss to Rwanda on Thursday. Despite missing several key players, including Ademola Lookman, Ola Aina, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, Nigeria started the game with a much-changed lineup under interim coach Austine Eguavoen. Striker Victor Osimhen was also benched, with Udinese’s Maduka Okoye starting in goal.

The Super Eagles failed to capitalize on early chances in a goalless first half, before Chukwueze’s sensational solo effort broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. However, Rwanda responded swiftly. Mutsinzi Ange equalized in the 72nd minute, followed by Nsuti Innocent’s quick strike in the 75th to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Despite introducing Osimhen and Sadiq Umar in search of an equalizer, Nigeria could not break down the resolute Rwandan defense. The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of completing the qualification campaign unbeaten, but it secured a historic win for Rwanda, who will now shift focus to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will meet Nigeria again.

Although the Amavubi’s victory was memorable, they were ultimately denied a spot in the 2025 AFCON, finishing behind Benin Republic in the group standings.
