Onitsha Market Traders Reopen Shops Following Soludo’s Directive

Traders at Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State have resumed business after a one-week shutdown ordered by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The market closure followed traders perceived compliance with the Monday sit-at-home order imposed by non-state actors in the South-East, a practice that has disrupted economic and social activities for years.

During a visit on Monday, Channels Television observed traders setting up their wares across major market entrances, including Egerton, Ose foodstuff market, and Young Park, while customers began patronizing shops.

Security personnel, including police and army, were deployed to ensure compliance with the government directive.

Governor Soludo has previously condemned the sit-at-home as economic sabotage, formally ending it in 2022 and urging residents to go about lawful activities.

While the practice has largely faded, some residents still remain cautious.
