LAGOS: Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has once again set social media on fire after accusing Delta North senator and billionaire businessman, Prince Ned Nwoko, of marrying actress Regina Daniels when she was still underage.
Taking to his verified X handle on Monday, Sowore posted screenshots of what he claimed were official documents showing that Regina was only 17 years old when she tied the knot with Ned Nwoko in 2019.
According to Sowore, the actress’s passport lists her date of birth as October 10, 2001, meaning she was a minor at the time of the marriage.
He alleged that Nwoko, a UK-trained lawyer and influential politician, used his wealth and power to cover up the situation and avoid scrutinyThe documents don’t lie, Sowore wrote.
Ned Nwoko married Regina Daniels at 17, and the Nigerian system looked away. He couldn’t risk visiting the US or UK afterwards because those countries take child marriage seriously. It’s time for Nigerians to wake up.”
The post quickly gained traction, amassing thousands of comments and shares within hours. Many users demanded that the authorities look into the claim, while others accused Sowore of chasing clout or trying to reopen an old issue for political reasons.
Some fans of the actress rushed to her defense, insisting that Regina has repeatedly stated she was above 18 when she got married. They also accused Sowore of targeting a happy family for attention.
However, others argued that if the activist’s claims are true, then questions must be asked about how a high-profile marriage like that escaped legal scrutiny.
The couple, who tied the knot in a lavish traditional ceremony in Aniocha North, Delta State, are now proud parents of two sons. Regina has also built a strong social media brand, with millions of followers and several endorsement deals.
Meanwhile, Sowore doubled down on his comments, calling on Nigerian law enforcement agencies to investigate what he described as “an open secret everyone chose to ignore.
Neither Ned Nwoko nor Regina Daniels has issued any statement in response to the allegations as of the time of this report.
