The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System designed to give locations across Nigeria precise digital identifiers and improve the way homes, businesses and communities are located.
The Postmaster-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, announced the initiative in a statement on Thursday, describing it as a major step towards improving addressing and location services across the country.
Odeyemi said every location in Nigeria now has a postcode, urging Nigerians to identify and use the codes assigned to their respective locations.
Everyone in Nigeria has a location. Now every location has a postcode. Today, on our Independence Day, NIPOST launches the National Digital Postcode System. #KnowYourPostcode, he said.
According to NIPOST, the new system assigns a precise digital alphanumeric postcode to addressable locations, including homes, shops, farms, schools and offices.
The system is mapped and managed through NIPOST’s new Geographic Information System laboratory.
Odeyemi explained that the initiative is intended to move Nigeria away from a heavy reliance on landmarks and verbal descriptions when people are trying to locate addresses.
For years, Nigerians have often depended on landmarks, directions and descriptions to find homes and businesses. NIPOST said the new system is designed to provide a more precise alternative.
“A precise add
The system provides every addressable building in Nigeria with a unique 11-character digital postcode.
The postcode is designed to provide a precise geographical reference through a Geographic Information System (GIS).
According to NIPOST, the system identifies locations according to state, local government area, district, area and individual buildings.
This means that rather than relying solely on a general street address or nearby landmark, a particular addressable building can be identified using its assigned digital postcode.
The new postcode system is expected to have implications for mail and parcel deliveries across Nigeria.
By providing standardised location information, the system could make it easier for delivery companies and other service providers to locate customers more accurately.
The initiative is also expected to support the expansion of e-commerce and last-mile delivery services by providing businesses with more precise information about where customers are located.
NIPOST said the system is not simply about traditional postal services, but is intended to create a wider digital addressing infrastructure for the country.
Emergency response is another major area the new system is expected to support.
Odeyemi said the reliance on landmarks and imprecise directions has contributed to difficulties in locating people and delays in emergency situations.
With individual buildings assigned unique digital postcodes, emergency responders are expected to have a more precise geographical reference when responding to calls for assistance.
The system could also help government agencies and other service providers identify communities and households more accurately.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, also highlighted the potential benefits of the nationwide postcode system.
Tijani said the system would make it easier for businesses to reach their customers and for emergency responders to accurately locate people who require assistance.
He added that the system could support government agencies in reaching communities with essential services.
An accurate postcode can make a meaningful difference in each of these lives,” the minister said.
Tijani described the initiative as a step towards making locations across Nigeria more accessible to businesses, government agencies and service providers.
Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” he said.
The minister urged Nigerians to identify the digital postcodes assigned to their locations through the official Digital Postcode website.
Nigerians can search for their locations through postcode.gov.ng to obtain the relevant postcode.
The system is expected to provide a standardised reference that can be used across different sectors, including postal and parcel delivery, emergency services, e-commerce, financial services and public-sector planning.
NIPOST’s new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System represents an effort to establish a more detailed and standardised location-identification framework across the country.
Beyond helping people receive letters and parcels, the system is intended to support the broader digital economy by making it easier to identify where people, businesses and communities are located.
The initiative could also provide useful location data for public planning and the delivery of essential services.
With every addressable building assigned an 11-character digital postcode, NIPOST says the system will give Nigerians a more precise way of identifying their locations.
For businesses, emergency responders and government agencies, the goal is to make it easier to find people and places accurately
