Nigerian Army Buries Brigadier General Braimah, Soldiers Killed in Borno Insurgent Attack

The Nigerian Army has laid to rest Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and several other soldiers who lost their lives in a deadly insurgent attack in Borno State.

The fallen officers and troops were buried on Wednesday at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery, in a solemn ceremony marked by full military honours, reflecting the nation’s recognition of their sacrifice.

According to military sources, the soldiers were killed on April 9, 2026, when suspected fighters from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province launched coordinated attacks on military formations in Benisheikh.

The town, located along the strategic Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, has long been a critical corridor in the fight against insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.

In an official statement, the Army described the burial as “solemn and emotionally charged,” as colleagues, families, and national leaders gathered to pay their final respects.

The fallen soldiers were honoured with full military rites, including:

  • Procession of caskets draped in national colours
  • Gun salutes
  • Reading of service citations
  • Prayers for the deceased Their sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid daily by members of the Armed Forces to safeguard the peace, unity, and security of Nigeria,” the Army stated.

Among dignitaries present at the burial were:

  • Babagana Zulum
  • Christopher Musa
  • Senior military commanders and government officials

They described the deceased as courageous patriots who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.

Governor Zulum and military leaders offered condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the sacrifices of the fallen would not be forgotten.

The ceremony underscored the ongoing human toll of Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, particularly in the North-East, where security forces continue to confront extremist groups.

Families of the deceased were visibly grief-stricken, highlighting the personal cost behind national security operations.

Military authorities noted that while the loss is painful, the courage and commitment of the fallen soldiers remain a source of inspiration for ongoing operations

The Army reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations against insurgent groups and restoring lasting peace to affected regions.

Security analysts say the attack in Benisheikh reflects the evolving tactics of insurgents, who continue to launch coordinated assaults despite sustained military pressure.

The burial of Brigadier General Braimah and his colleagues serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s armed forces in the line of duty.

As the nation mourns its fallen heroes, the tragedy reinforces the urgency of strengthening security strategies and supporting the men and women on the frontlines.

Their legacy, defined by courage and service, remains etched in the country’s ongoing pursuit of peace and stability.
