Nigeria Confirms First Ebola Case as Bundibugyo Strain, Patient Reportedly in Multi-Organ Failure

ABUJA: Nigeria has confirmed that its first reported Ebola case is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, with officials disclosing that the patient is a diplomat whose condition has reportedly deteriorated into multi-organ failure.

The confirmation was made on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, during an emergency meeting convened to discuss the outbreak and the country’s response.

Olajumoke Babatunde, Director of Public Health Laboratory Services at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), said laboratory investigations identified the Bundibugyo strain after three levels of molecular testing.

We did three levels of tests, but all molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” Babatunde said, according to Vanguard.

Another official disclosed during the meeting that the patient was a diplomat and had developed multi-organ failure, indicating a serious deterioration in their condition.

The Bundibugyo strain is a type of Ebola virus associated with previous outbreaks in Africa, including an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The identification of the strain is significant because different Ebola virus species can have different outbreak patterns and treatment options. Unlike the Zaire ebolavirus, for which specific vaccines and treatments have been developed, there is no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment established for Bundibugyo virus disease.

The confirmation places public health authorities under pressure to strengthen surveillance, identify potential contacts and implement appropriate infection prevention and control measures to limit further transmission.

Ebola is a severe viral disease that can spread through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of an infected person who is showing symptoms, as well as contaminated materials.

Health authorities typically respond to suspected or confirmed cases through isolation, laboratory testing, contact tracing, infection control and public health communication.

Further official information on the patient’s condition, possible exposure history and the extent of any contact-tracing exercise will be important in determining the risk to the wider public.

RapidoSpace News will continue to monitor official updates on the reported case and Nigeria’s response.
