Governor Seyi Makinde-led Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision reflects the government’s recognition of the significance of Hijrah to the Muslim community.
According to Oyelade, the Islamic New Year marks the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as one of the most important milestones in Islamic history.
“As a mark of respect and solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters, the Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day across the state,” the commissioner said.
He explained that the occasion provides an opportunity for Muslims and residents alike to reflect on the values of faith, sacrifice, unity and peaceful coexistence associated with the Hijrah.
The state government urged residents to use the holiday to offer prayers for lasting peace, progress and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.
Oyelade further called on citizens to embrace the spirit of brotherhood and togetherness, noting that the Islamic New Year should serve as a period of reflection and renewed commitment to the development of society.
“The Hijrah is a time for prayer, reflection and community spirit. We encourage all residents to come together in the spirit of unity and pray for peace, stability and prosperity in our state and the country,” he added.
The declaration means that government offices and public institutions in the state are expected to observe the holiday in celebration of Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement follows similar declarations by some northern states as Muslims across Nigeria prepare to usher in the new Islamic calendar year.
