Landslide Kills 26 in Western Kenya as Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc

NAIROBI:  At least 26 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 25 others remain missing following a devastating landslide in Kenya’s western Rift Valley region.

The disaster, which struck amid days of relentless rainfall, has cut off several communities, with roads rendered impassable by mudslides and flash floods.

The Kenyan Red Cross said the situation remains critical as rescuers battle to reach isolated villages.

Authorities confirmed that 25 victims with serious injuries were airlifted to Eldoret for urgent treatment, while others received first aid at the scene.

Rescue teams continued search operations through Saturday despite heavy rain and difficult terrain, combing through the rubble of destroyed homes in hopes of finding survivors.

More than 1,000 houses have been swept away in Chesongoch, a hilly community in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, one of the hardest-hit areas. Kenya’s Interior Minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, has urged residents living near riverbanks or unstable slopes to relocate to safer grounds.

The country is currently in its short rains season a typically brief period of moderate rainfallbu t scientists warn that climate change is intensifying such weather events, leading to more frequent floods and landslides. In recent years, hundreds have lost their lives in similar disasters across Kenya.

Officials say emergency relief and humanitarian aid are being mobilized for displaced families, while efforts to restore access roads and prevent further tragedies continue.
