Jubilant Abuja Welcomes Super Falcons After Dramatic Victory Over Morocco

ABUJA:Nigeria’s Super Falcons received a hero’s welcome at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday following their sensational victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they clinched a record-extending 10th continental title.

The team, featuring standout players like Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 2:26 p.m. via a chartered flight.

Awaiting them was a jubilant crowd of fans and senior government officials who gathered to celebrate the nation’s football heroines.

President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu hosted the champions at the State House, where they lauded the team’s remarkable comeback and praised their determination and fighting spirit.

Among top dignitaries present were Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, Minister of Culture and Tourism Hanatu Musawa, and Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, all of whom commended the Falcons for making the nation proud.

The celebrations are set to continue with a victory parade across Abuja. The team will ride in an open-top bus, proudly displaying the WAFCON trophy to their adoring supporters.

The Falcons’ road to victory reached its climax on Saturday, July 26, in Rabat. Facing host nation Morocco and trailing 2-0 by the 28th minute after goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, Nigeria launched a stunning second-half comeback.

Okoronkwo pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after a handball incident, before assisting Ijamilusi for the equaliser in the 71st.

The winner came in the 88th minute when Echegini capitalised on a deep free kick to slot home the decisive goal, sealing a dramatic 3-2 win.

The triumph reinforces Nigeria’s status as the undisputed powerhouse of African women’s football, underscoring a legacy of resilience, talent, and unmatched dominance.
