ABUJA: Senator Ireti Heebah Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called on the Senate leadership and committee chairmen to ensure strict compliance with Senate resolutions, stressing the need for stronger accountability among government agencies.
Kingibe made the call during Tuesday’s plenary, where she said she joined her distinguished colleague, Senator Abdul Ningi, in urging the Senate to deploy its constitutional powers to ensure that government institutions carry out their responsibilities in accordance with the law.
The senator emphasised that Senate resolutions must not be treated as mere declarations, but as decisions requiring appropriate follow-up and implementation in the interest of Nigerians.
According to her, the Senate leadership and committee chairmen have an important responsibility to ensure that government agencies comply with decisions reached by the chamber.
She further maintained that where institutions fail to comply, the appropriate measures must be taken in accordance with due process.
The FCT senator noted that the responsibilities of lawmakers extend beyond making laws and approving government budgets, explaining that effective legislative oversight is essential to ensuring that decisions taken in the public interest translate into tangible results.
“Our responsibility goes beyond passing laws and approving budgets. It includes ensuring that decisions taken in the interest of Nigerians are implemented and that the concerns of our communities receive the attention they deserve,” she stated.
Kingibe stressed that accountability and adherence to the rule of law remain critical to effective governance, adding that government institutions must be responsive to the needs and expectations of citizens.
She also underscored the importance of ensuring that concerns raised by communities receive adequate attention from relevant authorities.
Reaffirming her commitment to effective representation, Kingibe said Nigerians deserve a government that listens to their concerns, takes action and delivers on its responsibilities.
“The people deserve a government that listens, acts, and delivers,” she said.
The senator added that she would continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening accountability, upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the voices and needs of her constituents are not ignored.
Her remarks highlight the importance of legislative oversight in promoting transparency, improving institutional responsibility and ensuring that government decisions produce meaningful outcomes for citizens.
