Democrats Lead Republicans by 10 Points in US Congressional Poll as Trump’s Approval Falls to 33%

WASHINGTON, D.C.:  Democrats hold a 10-percentage-point advantage over Republicans in voters’ preferences for Congress in their own districts, according to a new national poll conducted by CNN in partnership with SSRS.

The poll points to a challenging political environment for Republicans ahead of the US congressional elections, as President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains low and concerns about the cost of living continue to weigh on American voters.

According to CNN’s Poll of Polls, Trump’s approval rating stands at 33% among US adults, reflecting widespread concerns over the economy and the administration’s handling of key national issues.

The economic pressure facing households, including the impact of the ongoing war with Iran, has emerged as a major issue shaping voters’ views and political preferences.

The Democrats’ 10-point advantage in the congressional preference poll could provide the party with a boost as it seeks to strengthen its position in Congress.

However, the political outlook is not straightforward. Despite Democrats’ nationwide lead, Republicans retain a potentially significant structural advantage in this year’s Senate races because of the composition of the Senate election map.

The distribution of competitive and safely held seats could make it difficult for Democrats to translate their nationwide polling advantage into substantial Senate gains.

The findings highlight the importance of economic conditions, presidential approval and state-by-state electoral contests in determining the balance of power in Washington.

While the poll suggests Democrats have an advantage in voters’ current congressional preferences, the outcome of the elections will depend on turnout, individual candidates and the dynamics of races across the country.
