HYPREP Awards Postgraduate Scholarships to 500 Ogoni Graduates, Releases ₦350m

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has awarded postgraduate scholarships to 500 Ogoni graduates in Rivers State as part of efforts to strengthen human capacity, promote research and support sustainable development in Ogoniland.

The Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, announced the scholarship awards at a ceremony on Friday, October 23, 2026, describing the initiative as an investment in education, research and the future of Ogoni communities.

Under the scheme, 300 master’s degree students will receive ₦500,000 each, while 200 doctoral students will receive ₦1 million each, bringing the total scholarship allocation to ₦350 million.

The intervention is intended to assist postgraduate students pursuing studies across different academic disciplines while encouraging research that could contribute to addressing environmental and socioeconomic challenges in Ogoniland.

Zabbey said the scholarship programme forms part of HYPREP’s broader commitment to implementing the recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland.

He explained that the initiative was designed not only to support academic advancement but also to promote alternative livelihoods and develop the human resources needed for the area’s long-term recovery.

Congratulating the beneficiaries, the project coordinator said the scholarship represented an opportunity for many graduates to pursue their academic ambitions while contributing to the development of their communities.

He described the intervention as a means of renewing hope and helping shape a better future for Ogoniland.

The HYPREP coordinator urged the scholarship recipients to regard the financial support as both an educational opportunity and a responsibility to society.

According to him, postgraduate students have an important role to play in generating ideas, conducting research and developing practical solutions to challenges facing their communities.

He encouraged the beneficiaries to apply their knowledge and expertise towards environmental sustainability, economic development and improved livelihoods in Ogoni.

Zabbey stressed that education should go beyond acquiring qualifications, noting that the knowledge gained by the students should contribute to addressing the needs of society.

He also emphasised the importance of research across different fields in shaping the future of Ogoniland.

Zabbey said the success of the Ogoni clean-up programme would require sustained cooperation among government institutions, community leaders, development partners, researchers and other stakeholders.

He identified government institutions, Rivers State Government agencies, local government councils, Ogoni communities, traditional institutions, Renaissance Africa Energy Limited and civil society organisations among the partners involved in supporting HYPREP’s activities.

The project coordinator maintained that the agency’s environmental remediation and livelihood interventions would benefit from stronger collaboration with researchers and postgraduate students.

He said the future of Ogoniland depended partly on the contributions of its people, particularly young professionals and researchers capable of developing solutions to local challenges.

The scholarship awards come within the broader context of environmental remediation and recovery efforts in Ogoniland, following the environmental concerns documented in the UNEP assessment.

Beyond environmental clean-up, sustainable recovery also involves expanding educational opportunities, strengthening livelihoods, building local expertise and supporting economic activities capable of improving living conditions.

Through the postgraduate scholarship programme, HYPREP is seeking to encourage academic development while preparing beneficiaries to contribute to different sectors of the economy.

The impact of the scheme will ultimately depend on the students’ academic progress, the quality and relevance of their research, and the extent to which their expertise translates into practical benefits for Ogoni communities.

The latest scholarship intervention represents another effort to connect education, research and community development with the wider objectives of Ogoniland’s environmental recovery.
