GLASGOW: A remarkable sporting legacy with roots in Umunede, Delta State, has been etched into Commonwealth boxing history as Isaac Okoh captured gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, becoming the second generation of the Okoh family to win a Commonwealth boxing title.
Isaac, who represented England in the men’s 90kg division at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, claimed the gold medal after a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision victory over Wales’ Connor Williams in the final on August 1.
His triumph comes three decades after his father, Chris Okoh, established himself as one of Britain’s leading professional cruiserweights by winning the Commonwealth (British Empire) Cruiserweight Championship in 1995.
Although they achieved success in different boxing codes Chris in professional boxing and Isaac in amateur competition the father and son have now joined an exclusive list of families to have produced Commonwealth champions across two generations.
Isaac enjoyed an outstanding campaign throughout the Glasgow Games, winning every bout in commanding fashion.
His journey to the gold medal began with a unanimous 5-0 victory over Australia’s Lachlan Lawson in the Round of 16 before defeating Scotland’s Robert McNulty by the same score in the quarter-finals.
After progressing to the final, he completed his unbeaten run with another convincing 5-0 victory over Connor Williams of Wales to secure the Commonwealth Games title.
The victory further cements Isaac’s growing reputation in amateur boxing, having also won the 90kg title at the 2025 World Boxing Cup Finals.
Speaking about his father’s influence, Isaac previously acknowledged the role Chris Okoh has played in his development. My dad used to be a boxer. He won the Commonwealth title, so he knows what it’s like to get in there
Okoh successfully defended the title three times before losing it to Darren Corbett in June 1997.
In addition to the Commonwealth belt, he also captured the BBBofC Southern Area Cruiserweight title and the WBO Inter-Continental Cruiserweight championship.
He retired with a professional record of 17 fights, winning 14, losing two and drawing one, with eight victories coming by knockout.
Today, Chris remains active in the sport as a boxing trainer at Chadwell St Mary Amateur Boxing Club in Essex, England, where he has worked with several top fighters, including former world heavyweight title challenger Dillian Whyte.
Beyond their achievements in the ring, the Okoh family’s story is also one of strong Nigerian heritage.
The family’s ancestral home is Idumu Ileje Quarters in Umunede, Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State, with the family’s lineage traced through John Ozor Okoh the elder brother to late ex banker Emmanuel Bob Okoh of blessed memory, father of Chris Okoh.
Their success continues to shine a spotlight on the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those of Delta State origin, who have excelled on the international sporting stage.
The Okoh family has now carved out a unique place in Commonwealth boxing history.
While Chris Okoh conquered the professional ranks by winning the Commonwealth cruiserweight championship in the 1990s, Isaac has replicated that success in amateur boxing by becoming the 2026 Commonwealth Games 90kg champion.
Their achievements span two generations and two eras of boxing, highlighting a remarkable family legacy built on talent, discipline and determination.
