Ghana Sack Otto Addo After Poor Run of Results Ahead of World Cup

The Ghana Football Association has dismissed the head coach of the Ghana national football team, Otto Addo, less than three months before the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision was announced in the early hours of Tuesday through an official statement released by the football governing body following Ghana’s disappointing 2–1 defeat to the Germany national football team in an international friendly played at the MHP Arena.

The defeat further deepened the Black Stars’ struggles, extending their losing streak to four matches in a row and triggering concerns about the team’s readiness for the global tournament.

Pressure had been mounting on Addo following Ghana’s humiliating 5–1 loss to the Austria national football team just days earlier. The back-to-back defeats intensified criticism from fans and football analysts who questioned the team’s tactical direction and overall performance.

Confirming the decision, the Ghana Football Association said it had parted ways with the coach with immediate effect.

“The Ghana Football Association has parted ways with the Head Coach of the senior men’s national team, Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the statement read.

The association also thanked Addo for his contributions to Ghanaian football and wished him success in his future career.

Addo’s Record as Ghana Coach

Addo took charge of the Black Stars in 2024 with hopes of rebuilding the team and guiding them to a strong showing at the next World Cup.

However, his tenure produced mixed results. In 22 matches under his leadership, Ghana recorded eight victories but struggled to maintain consistent form against stronger opponents.

The team’s recent string of poor results ultimately forced the football authorities to make a drastic decision despite the proximity of the World Cup.

The coaching shake-up comes at a critical stage of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, where they will face formidable teams including the England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.

Football analysts say the Ghana Football Association will now face a race against time to appoint a new coach capable of stabilising the team and restoring confidence ahead of the prestigious tournament.

The Ghana Football Association stated that it will soon announce a new technical direction for the national team.

The decision to sack Addo highlights the growing urgency within Ghanaian football leadership to ensure the Black Stars are competitive when the World Cup begins.

With the tournament fast approaching, attention will now turn to who will take over the managerial role and whether the new coach can quickly turn around the team’s fortunes.
