Fubara Sacks Commissioners, Public Officers After Supreme Court Ruling

PORTHARCOURT: Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dismissed all commissioners and public office holders in his administration following the recent Supreme Court judgment affecting the state.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday evening by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, and takes immediate effect.

During a valedictory session with his cabinet at the Government House, Port Harcourt, held to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, Fubara thanked the outgoing officials for their service and contributions over the past two years.

The Governor appreciates members of his cabinet for their commitment to the development of Rivers State. However, in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment, all affected commissioners and public officers are hereby relieved of their duties with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.

Fubara, who assured Rivers people of his renewed determination to serve, urged citizens to remain united in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s administration to build a peaceful and prosperous nation.

This move comes after months of uncertainty following the exit of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who had been appointed to administer the state under emergency rule declared by President Tinubu. During his tenure, Ibas suspended commissioners, dissolved boards, and removed heads of parastatals.

With the lifting of emergency rule on September 18, the Rivers State House of Assembly had asked Fubara to submit a new list of commissioner-nominees alongside the 2025 budget for screening and passage.

The governor is expected to forward fresh names to the Assembly in the coming days as part of efforts to reconstitute his cabinet.
