Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in London Hospital

LONDON: Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away in today’s afternoon of Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a London hospital. The sad announcement was made by his family through his media adviser, who released an official statement on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account at exactly 5:11pm

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and statesman, Muhammadu Buhari, the statement read. He died peacefully this afternoon while receiving medical care in London.”

Although the exact cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, Buhari’s health had been a subject of public concern for years. He frequently sought medical attention abroad during his tenure as president, with several prolonged absences noted throughout his administration.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari joined the Nigerian Army in 1961 and rapidly rose through the ranks. He eventually became the General Officer Commanding the Third Armoured Division.

His military career culminated in a coup that installed him as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 after overthrowing the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari.

His military regime was known for its strict anti-corruption stance and the launch of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI), aimed at instilling civic order and national responsibility.

After being removed from power in another coup in 1985, Buhari remained a prominent figure in Nigerian politics.

He contested presidential elections multiple times before winning in 2015 as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. He served two terms, leaving office in 2023.

During his civilian presidency, Buhari was both praised and criticized. Supporters highlighted his infrastructural strides and anti-corruption efforts, while critics cited worsening insecurity, economic difficulties, and alleged human rights abuses.

A retired Major General, Buhari’s legacy remains complex and far-reaching, spanning military rule and democratic governance.

He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, as well as several children and grandchildren. The family has stated that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Condolences are pouring in from across the globe as Nigerians and international figures mourn the passing of a man whose leadership left a lasting imprint on Africa’s most populous nation.
