Five Killed, Three Injured in Suspected Gang-Related Shooting Near Cape Town

CAPE-TOWN: Five people have been killed and three others injured in a suspected gang-related mass shooting at a residential property near Cape Town, South Africa, police have confirmed.

The shooting occurred at a home on Blode Street, in the area near Steenberg and Lavender Hill, at approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the victims, aged between 21 and 33, were reportedly drinking inside the house when an unknown number of gunmen entered the property and opened fire.

Four men and one woman were declared dead at the scene, while another man and two women were taken to hospital for treatment.

Western Cape police said investigations were ongoing, with detectives yet to identify the attackers or make any arrests.

Authorities believe the incident may be linked to gang violence, a persistent security challenge in parts of the Western Cape.

“The incident is believed to be linked to gang violence. No arrests have been made yet,” police said in a statement on Sunday.

The police added that detectives attached to the anti-gang unit were working to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Police also said officers remained on high alert in the area as investigations continued.

The motive for the attack has not been conclusively established, and authorities have not publicly identified the victims or suspects.

The shooting comes as the South African government continues to deploy resources to tackle gang-related violence and organised crime.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana reportedly confirmed earlier in the week that R823 million would be allocated to the South African National Defence Force to support troop deployments assisting police in the fight against gang-related crime under Operation Prosper.

The initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen security in crime-affected communities.

Before Operation Prosper, Operation Lockdown III reportedly spent R38 million on gang-related operations in the Western Cape during the 2025–2026 financial year.

A SAPS annual report presented to the Select Committee on Security and Justice on Thursday also highlighted efforts to improve policing through intelligence-led deployments and evidence-based operations in high-crime areas.

According to the report, this approach had been implemented at 30 priority police stations across seven districts in the Western Cape.

SAPS said that during the first phase of Operation Prosper, which ran from April 1 to June 30, 2026, police recorded what they described as a substantial number of arrests linked to murder, firearms and drug-related offences.

The report added that coordinated, high-visibility and targeted operations had helped stabilise violent flare-ups in designated areas, while most priority gang-afflicted police stations in the Western Cape recorded reductions in violent crime.

Authorities said the operation was shifting from broad disruption activities towards intelligence-led targeting of organised criminal networks.

However, the latest mass shooting highlights the continuing threat posed by gun violence in affected communities.

Police investigations into Saturday’s attack are ongoing, and authorities are yet to announce arrests or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the killings
