Firm Backs Nigerian Marathon Stars for International Competitions

BRIT Properties Nigeria Limited has announced plans to sponsor outstanding Nigerian long-distance runners for international competitions, as part of efforts to support local athletic talent and promote sports development in the country.

The company made the announcement during the 2026 edition of the BRIT Marathon 2.0, a 22-kilometre road race held in Lagos to mark its 16th anniversary. The event attracted more than 1,350 runners from different parts of the country, all competing for a total prize pool of $3,500.

Speaking at the finish line in Sangotedo, Managing Director of BRIT Properties, Bright Chimezie, said the company’s vision goes beyond organising a one-off sporting event, adding that it is committed to discovering hidden talents and helping them gain international exposure.

According to him, the annual marathon will be expanded to other regions of the country, while exceptional athletes identified through the competition will receive sponsorship to participate in global events. He said the initiative is designed not only to encourage healthy living but also to create opportunities for young Nigerians who possess sporting talent but lack financial support.

The prospect of overseas sponsorship generated excitement among participants, many of whom described the opportunity as a major turning point in their careers. One of the standout performers, Alabi Aminat Adenike, emerged as the first female finisher and seventh overall. She said her dream is to secure sponsorship that would allow her train abroad, particularly in Kenya, which is globally recognised for its strong marathon culture.

Athletes from Plateau State dominated the race, with Clement Badung claiming the top prize of $1,000. Another competitor, Solomon Iniangboyi, said proper sponsorship and structured training could enable Nigerian runners to challenge the long-standing dominance of East African athletes in long-distance races within a few years.

Beyond sports, the company also incorporated a broad community development initiative into the anniversary celebration. It sponsored a three-day medical outreach in the Gbara community, offering free healthcare services, consultations, treatments and eye surgeries to residents.

One beneficiary, Rebecca Oriseh, praised the initiative, saying it not only improved access to healthcare but also demonstrated the company’s commitment to youth empowerment and community support.

BRIT Properties said it plans to continue combining sports, healthcare and investment-driven social programmes as part of its broader corporate social responsibility strategy aimed at national development.
