ASABA: Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed security agencies to investigate a reported clash between suspected supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the All-Progressives Congress (APC) during an NDC mobilization march in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 18, 2026, during an NDC mobilization exercise tagged the One Million March for NDC Candidates” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to reports, the confrontation happened along Airport Road in Effurun as NDC supporters moved through the area as part of the party’s campaign activities.
Videos circulated online showed a chaotic scene involving groups of political supporters, with some individuals seen carrying sticks. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the identities of those involved and what triggered the incident, remain subject to investigation.
Reacting to the development, the Delta State Government condemned the reported violence and directed security agencies to investigate the incident and prosecute anyone found culpable.
The directive was disclosed by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, who said Governor Oborevwori was concerned about the incident and the video circulating online.
Aniagwu stressed that political competition should not degenerate into violence, intimidation or thuggery.
He also stated that political parties, candidates and their supporters have the right to campaign freely and peacefully across Delta State, provided their activities remain within the law.
The confrontation has been described in reports as a clash involving suspected supporters of the NDC and APC.
However, claims about who initiated the confrontation or whether particular political actors were responsible have not been independently established. The police had also not publicly issued a detailed statement on the incident at the time of the initial reports.
An NDC candidate for the Ughelli/Udu Federal Constituency, Dr Obiuwevbi Ominimini, was reported to have accused the APC and Governor Oborevwori of involvement in the alleged attack. Those allegations remain claims by the candidate and were not presented as established facts.
The Delta Government said no political party should be prevented from carrying out lawful campaign activities anywhere in the state.
The administration’s position comes as political parties intensify mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with campaign activities and grassroots engagements increasing across the state.
The government said political differences should be managed within democratic and legal boundaries rather than through physical confrontation or intimidation.
The security investigation is expected to establish what led to the Effurun confrontation and determine whether any individuals committed offences during the incident.
