Delta injects N100bn intervention fund, flags off N59.7bn Agbor–Uromi flyover

AGBOR: The Delta State Government has injected a N100 billion special intervention fund to fast-track infrastructure development across the state, with each of the 25 local government areas receiving N4 billion for priority projects.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this on Monday in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, during the flag-off ceremony of the N59.7 billion Agbor–Uromi Junction Flyover, which he described as critical to road safety, economic growth and regional connectivity.

Oborevwori said the flyover was designed to permanently address persistent traffic congestion and frequent fatal accidents at the Agbor–Uromi Junction, a major intersection along the Lagos–East–West transport corridor.

According to the governor, the junction has over the years recorded loss of lives and property due to the dangerous convergence of heavy-duty vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians on the federal highway.

The importance of this route to the national economy cannot be overstated. Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this axis, he said, adding that a lasting engineering solution had become unavoidable.

He disclosed that the design and construction contract had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a completion period of 14 months.

The project comprises a 1.3-kilometre flyover along the Uromi–Agbor Highway, dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction, ramps and roundabouts, reinforced concrete drainage systems, kerbs and solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety and sustainability.

Beyond the flyover, Oborevwori said Ika South Local Government Area was benefiting from additional interventions, including a N15.4 billion contract for 13.3 kilometres of concrete drainage and five kilometres of road construction to tackle flooding and erosion.

He also mentioned the proposed N12 billion, 15-kilometre Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road.

The governor stressed that the N100 billion intervention fund reflected his administration’s commitment to spreading development across all parts of the state and closing long-standing infrastructure gaps at the grassroots.

In his remarks, former governor of the state, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, described the Agbor–Uromi Junction Flyover as a monumental and impactful project, commending Oborevwori for sustaining policy continuity and translating plans into concrete development.

Okowa also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the ongoing economic reforms, though initially challenging, were aimed at steering the country towards long-term sustainability.

The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described the governor as audacious and hardworking, highlighting the numerous infrastructure projects executed by the administration across the Ika nation.

He appealed for continued public support to enable the government deepen development efforts in the coming years.

Speaking on behalf of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Frederich Weiser thanked the Delta State Government for the confidence reposed in the company, assuring that the project would be delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety and efficiency, and completed on schedule with minimal disruption to traffic.

The Agbor–Uromi Flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic flow, reduce road accidents and strengthen Delta State’s role as a key transit hub within Nigeria’s national road network.
