ASABA: The emergence of Hon. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri as the Ika North-East Local Government Area Coordinator for Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s 2027 re-election campaign is a development worthy of warm congratulations. It is also an occasion to reflect on the responsibilities that accompany political leadership, the value of experience in public service and the importance of purposeful grassroots engagement in the democratic process.
I heartily congratulate Hon. Elekeokwuri on this significant political responsibility. His appointment brings into focus a familiar son of Ika North-East whose public service journey has included eight years in the Delta State House of Assembly and his present position as Director-General of the Delta State Investment Development Agency (DIDA). His confirmation as DIDA Director-General by the Delta State House of Assembly in May 2024 further reflects his progression from legislative service into an executive institutional role.
These experiences provide an important foundation for his new assignment. His legislative years brought him into sustained engagement with the concerns of his constituents, while his present responsibility in investment development places him within an institutional framework concerned with economic opportunities and the promotion of Delta State as an investment destination.
In 2017, reports on his constituency interventions highlighted the rehabilitation of earth roads, support for women and young people, assistance to persons with disabilities, and the provision of school furniture. These reported activities offer useful reference points for understanding his previous engagement with community development.
The challenge before him now is to bring the lessons of legislative representation, public administration, stakeholder relations and community engagement to bear on a broader assignment.
EXPERIENCE, RESPONSIBILITY AND THE TASK AHEAD
Political appointments are most meaningful when the experience they recognise is translated into practical service. As Ika North-East Coordinator, Elekeokwuri and has an opportunity to build an inclusive organisational framework that brings together party leaders, ward structures, community stakeholders, women, young people, professionals and other interested residents.
Such a framework must be more than a collection of names and titles. It should function as a coherent system for communication, consultation, coordination and the constructive exchange of ideas.
A local government area as historically significant and socially diverse as Ika North-East requires an approach that respects the individuality of its communities while recognising their shared development interests.
For Elekeokwuri, the assignment presents an opportunity to combine political organisation with a practical understanding of the aspirations of the people he has previously represented.
FIVE PRIORITIES FOR AN EFFECTIVE LOCAL COORDINATION FRAMEWORK
1. Build unity across wards and communities.
The first priority should be to establish an inclusive structure that gives each ward and community a meaningful place in local political coordination. Established party members, new entrants, traditional institutions, community associations and other relevant stakeholders should be engaged with courtesy and fairness.
Differences in political history or personal ambition should not become obstacles to constructive cooperation. Consultation, conflict resolution and respect for legitimate interests will be essential to sustaining cohesion.
2. Establish a reliable grassroots communication network.
Effective coordination depends on accurate information moving in both directions. Ward and community representatives should have clear channels for communicating developments, gathering concerns and reporting issues requiring attention.
Regular consultations, periodic stakeholder meetings and a properly maintained feedback mechanism would help ensure that the local structure remains connected to realities on the ground rather than relying exclusively on occasional political gatherings.
3. Make community concerns central to engagement.
Political engagement is strengthened when it is informed by the everyday concerns of residents. These include road infrastructure, electricity, water supply, healthcare, education, employment, agricultural development, youth enterprise and support for vulnerable households.
The coordinator’s role should include helping to document these concerns, distinguish immediate priorities from longer-term development needs, and communicate them through appropriate party and governmental channels.
A community development register, compiled through consultation and periodically reviewed, could provide a useful basis for sustained engagement.
4. Promote youth participation, women’s inclusion and professional contributions.
The future of Ika North-East requires the active participation of its younger generation. Young people should have opportunities to contribute ideas, acquire organisational experience and participate constructively in civic affairs.
Women, professionals, entrepreneurs, farmers, artisans and members of the diaspora also possess valuable knowledge and networks. Their participation should be substantive rather than ceremonial.
A well-organised local framework should make room for these different perspectives and encourage peaceful, issue-based participation.
5. Connect investment opportunities with local economic aspirations.
Elekeokwuri’s position as Director-General of DIDA provides a relevant institutional perspective on investment promotion and economic development. While the responsibilities of that office must remain distinct from his political assignment, his professional experience can inform constructive conversations about the economic future of Ika North-East.
Community stakeholders would benefit from better awareness of legitimate investment opportunities, entrepreneurship support, skills development and the conditions required to attract productive businesses.
Where appropriate, engagement with relevant government agencies and private-sector institutions could help identify practical opportunities for local enterprise, job creation and sustainable development.
FROM ORGANISATION TO ACCOUNTABILITY
An effective coordination framework should also establish clear priorities, responsibilities and review mechanisms. The work should be organised around achievable milestones, regular consultations and transparent reporting of activities.
Political mobilisation and public administration are distinct responsibilities, but both benefit from discipline, communication and accountability.
For the campaign organisation, this means maintaining an orderly structure and encouraging lawful, peaceful and issue-based participation. For public governance, it means ensuring that community concerns are conveyed to the appropriate institutions and that official programmes are assessed against their stated objectives.
The distinction is important. A campaign coordinator cannot personally resolve every infrastructure or social-service challenge, nor should the office be confused with an executive governmental position. Nevertheless, an effective coordinator can help ensure that issues are properly documented, communicated and followed through the appropriate channels.
A RESPONSIBILITY WORTHY OF EXPERIENCE
Hon. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri’s new assignment brings together his political experience, his familiarity with Ika North-East and his wider public service responsibilities. It offers an opportunity to demonstrate how experience can contribute to orderly political organisation, constructive stakeholder engagement and a stronger connection between public institutions and community concerns.
My congratulations to him are accompanied by a sincere wish that his tenure in this coordinating role will be distinguished by inclusiveness, strategic clarity, diligence and a genuine appreciation of the people whose interests make local politics meaningful.
Ika North-East has a rich history, a strong communal identity and human resources capable of contributing substantially to Delta State’s development. Harnessing these assets requires leaders who can listen carefully, build bridges, organise effectively and keep the interests of the communities in view.
As the 2027 political season progresses, the enduring measure of leadership will remain the quality of engagement, the strength of institutions and the extent to which public aspirations are taken seriously.
Congratulations, Hon. Elekeokwuri. May this new responsibility provide another opportunity to bring experience to bear on service, strengthen constructive relationships across Ika North-East and contribute meaningfully to the democratic and developmental aspirations of our people.
