Nigerian-American Afrobeats star Davido is facing a wave of criticism after excitedly announcing he voted in the 2024 US presidential election, something he claimed was his first time ever voting.
On November 5, 2024, as election day dawned in the United States, Davido shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter), proudly showing off his ‘I voted’ sticker and expressing joy over exercising his civil right.
However, his celebratory post quickly sparked outrage among many Nigerians, who accused him of hypocrisy for being vocal about voting in the US while remaining largely silent about the 2023 Nigerian presidential election.
Many of his followers were quick to point out that Davido had not shown similar enthusiasm or commitment to voting or addressing issues like electoral malpractice during the Nigerian election cycle.
An X user wrote ”You’ve never voted in Nigeria but now you’re seeking validation from Americans?” one fan angrily commented.
Another user wrote, “You fit vote for Yankee presidential candidate, but you can’t vote for Nigeria’s? You just want attention from these people while Nigerians are suffering.”
The backlash grew louder, with many fans accusing the singer of being out of touch and only interested in attracting foreign praise.

Social media personality Daniel Regha took to X to call out Davido’s actions: “Davido, where was this energy during the Nigerian general election? You didn’t show proof of voting, didn’t support the voters, or even call on the INEC when there were reports of electoral malpractices across the country. But now you’re proud to vote in the US election? This is not the achievement you think it is.”
One commenter summed up the sentiment with: “In your entire life? Not even in Nigeria?”
As the backlash continues to build, Davido’s actions have sparked a debate about celebrity activism and the responsibility public figures have in advocating for change in their home country.
