Canada booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.
The co-hosts, who finished second in Group B and therefore surrendered home advantage for the knockout tie, dominated much of the contest but looked destined for extra time before Eustaquio produced a moment of brilliance in the 92nd minute.
His late strike sealed Canada’s first-ever victory in a FIFA World Cup knockout match and kept alive the country’s dream of a memorable tournament on home soil.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4.
The opening half was a cagey affair with clear-cut opportunities at a premium. However, Canada came within inches of taking the lead just before the interval.
Defender Moise Bombito met a cross with a powerful header that appeared destined for the net before South Africa’s Aubrey Modiba produced a superb goal-line clearance. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams then reacted brilliantly to deny Tajon Buchanan from the rebound.
Canada also felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Richie Laryea went down under a challenge from Khuliso Mudau inside the penalty area. Referee Joao Pinheiro waved play on, and a subsequent VAR review upheld the decision.
South Africa owed much of their resilience to captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who repeatedly frustrated the Canadian attack.
In the 64th minute, Tani Oluwaseyi raced clear on goal but was denied by another excellent Williams save. Mbekezeli Mbokazi then completed a remarkable defensive recovery by clearing the loose ball before Jonathan David could convert into an empty net.
Canada continued to pile on the pressure after Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament. Promise David curled a long-range effort narrowly wide, while Jonathan David also forced Williams into another smart save at his near post.
South Africa nearly stole victory themselves when Oswin Appollis unleashed a powerful strike, but Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau produced an important save to keep the scores level.
With extra time looming, Canada finally found the breakthrough in stoppage time.
South Africa failed to deal with a delivery into the penalty area, allowing Stephen Eustaquio to bring the ball under control with his chest before firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom-left corner.
The late goal sparked wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters, as the co-hosts secured a famous victory and advanced to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Canada will now travel to Houston for their next knockout fixture, where they will meet either the Netherlands or Morocco for a place in the quarter-finals.
Despite South Africa’s spirited defensive display and the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Bafana Bafana’s historic World Cup campaign came to an end following Eustaquio’s decisive late intervention.
