Ayra Starr Wins Best International Act at 2025 BET Awards

LOS ANGELES-USA: Nigerian music sensation Starr- Ayra celebrated a major career milestone at the 2025 BET Awards, clinching the Best International Artist, her first win at the prestigious event.

The 21-year-old Afrobeats star had gone into the night as the most-nominated African artist, earning nods in three categories: Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act.

Though she missed out in the first two losing to SZA and Leon Thomas respectively her international win underscored her rising global impact and growing acclaim.

Her triumph stood out on a night that ended in disappointment for other Nigerian nominees.

Also in the spotlight was Tems, who received two nominations in the BET Her category for her songs Burning and Hold On from her debut album Born In The Wild.

Shallipopi, a rising star known for his street-hop flair, was nominated for Best New International Act, while Rema was also up for Best International Act, but neither secured a win.

The ceremony, hosted by comedian Kevin Hart at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, was largely dominated by U.S. artists most notably Kendrick Lamar, who swept five major categories. Lamar took home:

  • Album of the Year for GNX

  • Best Male Hip Hop Artist

  • Video of the Year for Not Like Us

  • Best Collaboration with SZA on Luther

  • Video Director of the Year, shared with longtime collaborator Dave Free

Ayra Starr’s win marked a pivotal moment for African music on the global stage and a clear signal that the Afrobeats wave is far from over.
