Aston Villa booked their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Liverpool FC at Villa Park on Friday night.
The crucial Premier League clash saw Villa deliver an impressive performance against the Reds, with striker Ollie Watkins scoring twice as manager Unai Emery was rewarded for fielding a strong starting line-up just days before the club’s Europa League final.
The win secured Villa’s return to Europe’s elite competition and marked a major achievement for the club, who are set to feature in the Champions League for only the second time since the 1982/83 season.
For Liverpool, the defeat dealt a serious blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four. The Merseyside club dropped to fifth place and now remain only four points ahead of AFC Bournemouth, who still have two games left to play.
The result has also intensified pressure on Liverpool manager Arne Slot, whose future has come under scrutiny following a disappointing title defence campaign.
Liverpool went into the match with several key absentees due to injury, including first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, while stars such as Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz were only fit enough to start on the bench.
Villa took the lead just before halftime through a well-worked short corner routine that allowed Morgan Rogers to curl the ball into the net, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Liverpool responded shortly after the restart when captain Virgil van Dijk headed in an equaliser from a free-kick delivered by Dominik Szoboszlai.
The visitors almost went ahead moments later when Rio Ngumoha struck the inside of the post, but Villa quickly regained control.
A costly slip by Szoboszlai deep in Liverpool’s half allowed Rogers to deliver a cross for Watkins, who tapped in Villa’s second goal. The hosts then piled on the pressure, dominating the game as Liverpool struggled defensively.
Watkins grabbed his second goal after capitalising on a scramble in the box, while Villa captain John McGinn sealed the victory with a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.
Liverpool managed a late consolation through another header from Van Dijk in stoppage time, but it did little to change the outcome.
The defeat leaves Liverpool facing a tense end to the season. If Bournemouth manage to upset Manchester City in their upcoming fixture, the Reds could head into the final day needing a result against Brentford FC to secure Champions League qualification.
For Villa, however, the night belonged to Emery’s side as they celebrated a famous win and a long-awaited return to Europe’s biggest club competition.
