Anambra Govt Warns APGA Supporters Against Peter Obi, NDC Ahead of 2027

AWKA: The Anambra State Government has urged supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to remain loyal to the party and resist the New Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The government made the call in a statement titled “A Betrayal Alert for Ndi APGA”, published on Monday through its official X platform.

In the statement, the state government accused former Anambra governor and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi of working to weaken APGA since leaving the party in 2014.

The government described Obi’s political activities as a threat to the party that produced him as governor, urging APGA supporters not to support the NDC in the 2027 elections. A vote for Peter Obi and the NDC is a vote to kill APGA,” the government said.

According to the state government, Obi has allegedly pursued what it described as “one mission” since 2014 — to undermine APGA.

The government also claimed that while President Bola Tinubu supported APGA in 2025, Obi backed efforts that could weaken the party.

It urged APGA members and supporters to remain vigilant and defend the party’s political base in the state. Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home. Resist the NDC,” the government said.

Obi served as governor of Anambra State from March 2006 to March 2014 under the APGA platform.

His first tenure was interrupted in November 2006 when he was impeached, although he later returned to office following a court decision.

After completing his tenure, Obi left APGA in October 2014 and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He subsequently left the PDP in May 2022 and joined the Labour Party to contest the 2023 presidential election.

Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election behind Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, who was declared the winner.

In December 2025, Obi left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Months later, he and former New Nigeria Peoples Party presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso formally announced their move to the NDC, further reshaping the opposition political landscape ahead of 2027.

The latest confrontation between Obi and the Anambra State Government comes against the backdrop of an ongoing disagreement over debts allegedly inherited from previous administrations.

The dispute intensified on September 14 after Anambra State Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, said the state was still servicing loans obtained by previous administrations, including those of Obi and former governor Willie Obiano.

Obi rejected the claim, insisting that he left office without outstanding debts.

The former governor also maintained that his administration did not owe salaries, pensions or contractors when he left office.

He further claimed that his administration left about N2.1 billion in ecological funds for the state.

The Anambra State Government subsequently released details of what it described as external debt inherited from Obi’s administration.

The Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, alleged that Obi left about $123.77 million in debt when he concluded his tenure.

Mefor also challenged Obi’s claim concerning the ecological funds, saying the state government had no evidence that the alleged N2.1 billion was kept in a First Bank account.

The latest exchange has added another layer to the growing political contest ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in Anambra, where APGA has historically maintained a strong political presence.

With Obi now aligned with the NDC and seeking to play a major role in the opposition’s campaign, political tensions between his camp and the APGA-led state government are likely to remain significant.

The Anambra State Government’s latest appeal is therefore aimed at consolidating APGA support and preventing the opposition coalition from making inroads among the party’s traditional supporters.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the political battle in Anambra is expected to intensify, with APGA seeking to protect its influence in the state while opposition forces work to expand their support base
