Agbor Tanker Explosion: Fire Destroys Buildings, Vehicles Along Old Lagos–Asaba Road

AGBOR: A petrol tanker explosion in Agbor, Delta State, has triggered panic among residents, traders and motorists after a massive fire destroyed several buildings, vehicles and other properties along the busy Old Lagos–Asaba Road.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 18, 2026, around the Festy Pharmacy axis, opposite Orogodo Primary School and near Okoh Junction in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area.

Media reports indicated that the fire followed a collision involving a fuel-laden tanker. The flames reportedly spread rapidly, engulfing nearby vehicles and commercial buildings as people scrambled to escape the affected area.

Although preliminary accounts suggested that brake failure might have caused the tanker to lose control before colliding with another tanker, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident had not been officially established as of the time of filing this report.

The inferno reportedly destroyed Festy Chemist and several adjoining properties, leaving extensive damage along the affected stretch of the road.

Some reports also indicated that spilled petroleum products may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire through a nearby drainage channel. However, this detail had not been independently confirmed.

The incident caused considerable anxiety among residents, business owners, traders and road users, particularly as the flames threatened neighbouring buildings and other facilities.

Traffic movement along the Old Lagos–Asaba Road was also reportedly disrupted as the fire spread through the area.

The extent of the financial losses remained unknown, while further details about the damage to nearby businesses and residential properties were still being awaited.

The number of people killed or injured in the Agbor tanker explosion remained uncertain as of Sunday evening.

While preliminary information cited by one media outlet suggested that no deaths had been recorded, there was no definitive casualty figure independently verified in the reports reviewed.

The absence of confirmed figures means the possibility of casualties could not be conclusively ruled out at the time of publication.

Residents and motorists were advised to avoid the affected area, particularly locations where fuel might have spilled, because of the risk of further fires or explosions.

An official account establishing the cause of the collision, the number of casualties and the response of emergency agencies was still being awaited.

The Agbor incident has renewed concerns about the dangers of transporting petroleum products through densely populated communities, where busy highways run close to homes, shops and other commercial establishments.

Fuel tanker accidents can have devastating consequences when vehicles lose control, collide or overturn, particularly when spilled petroleum products ignite and allow flames to spread rapidly.

The latest incident also comes days after a reported deadly petrol tanker accident at Oluku Market near Benin City, Edo State, which reportedly claimed several lives and left others injured.

The incidents have again drawn attention to the dangers associated with petroleum transportation and the risks faced by people who approach accident scenes to scoop spilled fuel.

Sunday’s explosion has also revived memories of a similar tanker fire in Agbor in January 2025.

The earlier incident, which occurred along the Old Lagos–Asaba Road, reportedly killed several people and destroyed homes, vehicles and commercial properties.

The recurrence of such incidents along the same major transport corridor is likely to intensify calls for improved tanker safety, stricter enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness standards and more effective emergency response arrangements.

Stakeholders have repeatedly highlighted the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, compliance with road safety requirements and measures to reduce the risk of tanker-related disasters in populated areas.

As of the time of filing this report, further information regarding the cause of Sunday’s collision, confirmed casualties, the total value of properties destroyed and the actions taken by relevant emergency agencies remained unavailable in the reports reviewed.

The incident has once again highlighted the potential danger fuel tanker accidents pose to communities along major highways in Delta State and other parts of Nigeria.
