ENUGU: Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, has resigned from the All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the recent defection of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Abaribe announced his decision on Wednesday in Enugu while addressing party members at a gathering organized after Obi’s move to the ADC. Introducing himself to the audience, the lawmaker acknowledged the national chairman of the party, David Mark, and symbolically wore the ADC cap for the first time.
Mr David Mark, chairman of ADC, this is the logo of the party on this cap, and I’m wearing it for the first time, he said.
He disclosed that he had formally resigned from APGA earlier in the day, declaring his full commitment to the ADC.
“This morning, I resigned from the All-Progressives Grand Alliance. As of now, I am fully in ADC, following my brother and our leader, Mr Peter Obi,” Abaribe stated.
Expressing optimism about the party’s future, the senator said he was confident the ADC would achieve its political objectives.
I wish all of us well, and I know that we are going to get there, he said.
Reflecting on questions he had previously received about when political change would occur in Nigeria, Abaribe referenced an Igbo expression to underline the timeliness of the move.
When they asked me how it would happen, I told them, ‘Mgbe o ruru’ the time has come, he said.
According to Abaribe, the defection to the ADC represents a collective resolve to alter Nigeria’s political direction.
He accused the ruling party of betraying its promises to Nigerians since assuming power in 2015.
“We are all going into ADC, and we will remove the cancer that has held Nigeria down since 2015, he said.
That party promised change but brought pain, death and destruction to Nigeria.”
With his defection, Abaribe becomes the second serving senator to join the ADC, after Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Federal Capital Territory, who defected to the party earlier in the month.
