AAU Lecturer Found Dead in Edo Hotel Room After Encounter With 21-Year-Old Woman

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room, with the circumstances surrounding his death currently under investigation by the police.

Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

The incident was reported to the Edo State Police Command at about 8pm, after the lecturer had reportedly lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of a 21-year-old woman identified by the police as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to the police, Uwuigbe later asked the woman to leave the room to get water for him.

The woman reportedly returned to the hotel room and found the lecturer unresponsive and raised the alarm.

Edo State Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident, saying the woman’s discovery prompted a report to the police.

The police have since arrested and detained the 21-year-old woman, as well as the hotel owner and manager, as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

The command has not disclosed a cause of death and said investigations are ongoing to establish what happened before Uwuigbe was found dead.

His remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary, pending the outcome of the investigation and further medical procedures.

Ambrose Alli University has confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but clarified that the incident did not occur on the university premises.

The institution also said the circumstances surrounding the death were unrelated to any official university activity.

AAU spokesperson, Otunba Aladenika, further clarified that the 21-year-old woman mentioned in the police account was not a student of Ambrose Alli University.

The university’s clarification followed reports linking the lecturer’s death to an encounter with the woman at the hotel.

As police investigations continue, authorities are expected to establish the events leading to the lecturer’s death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.

The police have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
